Robert Wierzel’s lighting design for The Ghosts of Versailles was my first international project as a lighting design assistant, adapting an opera about the French Revolution from the Glimmerglass Festival in New York to King Louis XVI’s own theatre in Versailles, France.
As the Lighting Design Assistant, my responsibilities involved:
Communicating with the lighting team and designer on achieving similar effects with European equipment
Drafting all technical paperwork
Scheduling and prioritizing technical work calls
Programming the lighting rig
Coordinating the load-in and strike of the show with all other design departments
The plan view shows the size of the overhead lighting rig. Intelligent fixtures are shown in yellow, blue, and pink.
The section demonstrates the line of sight of an audience member and gives a sense of the scale of the production.
This drawing illustrates the semi-opaque moving walls, made to glow from the inside with 14 incandescent fixtures and fitted with 48 individually controlled LED flicker candles
